-=< FidoNet ADLIB Conference Rules - Updated on October 8th, 1995 >=-
Moderator: Erik Harris.
Contact: 1:2613/126, 13:13/0 (SBCNet), erik.harris@swcbbs.com,
levi@vivanet.com
Contrary to what some believe, this is NOT an echo for the discussion
of the AdLib sound cards. The FidoNet ADLIB conference is, in
actuality, the FidoNet International Sound Cards Echo, and is for the
discussion of all sound cards and all things directly sound
card-related.
In the past, this conference has been moderated purely at my
discretion, with no specific rules. Some SysOps and users have
requested me to post official rules, and this is my response. SysOps
may post this rules message as a bulletin or a text file displayed when
users enter the conference. Feel free to delete THIS paragraph, and
change line lengths (this uses 72 characters/line for compatibility with
all message bases). Other forms of editing are prohibited without
express permission.
These rules are mostly common sense. I've never suspended a user
from the Sound Cards echo before, and I have no set policy on suspending
users. Until I need one, this will remain true. No user will be
suspended without netmail warnings.
CONFERENCE RULES
================
WHAT IS NOT ALLOWED
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* No personal attacks or insults ("flames"). If you feel that you MUST
insult one of the users of this echo, do it in another medium, i.e.
Fido Netmail or InterNet EMail.
* No sound cards attacks. There is a big difference between discussion
and bashing. Messages like "Card X stinks!" or "Card Y rules, and all
other cards are terrible" are useless. All they do is offend people
who have Card X. If you don't like a sound card, feel free to say so,
but be prepared to say WHY. And keep in mind that the sound card that
is the best for YOU may not be the best for everyone else.
* No vulgar language. Remember, there are people of all ages here, and
there are many adults who are offended by vulgar language. What is
considered vulgar is up to me.
* No test messages. To test your connection, ask a sound card question.
* Don't over quote. Quote the parts of a message that you're replying
to. Specifically, if you're not saying something specifically about
them, do not quote taglines, tearlines, and Origin lines.
* All messages should be in English. This includes foreign languages
and messages that are encoded or encrypted in any way.
* Don't play moderator. That's my job. If you see an off-topic message,
and nothing about it from me, assume it's being handled in netmail.
* All messages should be related to sound cards. Gaming, OS wars, and
video cards are topics that spring up often. Try to keep this from
happening.
* Don't reply to off topic messages. If you can somehow turn an off
topic message into an on-topic thread, though, go right ahead.
* No messages using ANSI. All messages should be using standard ASCII
text. High ASCII is allowed, but please use it sparingly.
ALIASES
~~~~~~~
* Contrary to popular belief, handles are NOT prohibited in FidoNet.
Moderators decide if they're allowed. Here, aliases are discouraged,
but allowed. You must, however, make sure your BBS will let you see
netmail to your alias if you use it, or, if your system doesn't
directly support netmail, that your SysOp will know who to forward the
message to if netmail is sent to your alias. (This is for moderation
purposes, and so other users can contact you privately).
If you cause any problems, your right to use an alias in the Sound
Cards echo can be taken away at any time. If enough alias using
people cause problems, this rule may be changed entirely.
WHAT IS ALLOWED
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Obviously, discussion about different sound cards.
* Discussions of programs and how they relate to sound cards.
* Any other computer sound subjects, like speakers, sound files (S3M,
MTM, MID), video/sound demos, new sound technologies, and so on.
* Sound related advertisements - sound cards for sale, BBSes catering to
sound cards, networks, etc. Advertisements are allowed, but not more
often than once per month per advertisement. Please don't dump a
large number of ads in the echo each month.
Questions, comments, criticisms, and suggestions related to my
moderating & these rules are welcomed privately at any of the addresses
listed above (the "Contact:" line).
